This was a hugh dry and open area in Nevada last year when we were heading to the coast.  It was pretty amazing to see.  Think I may have a distance shot -- but it is not so good.  Phone photos.

Does anyone know what this is?  Daddy picked it at work today and we are not sure what it is.  Dad sampled a bit and says it doesn't taste like much at all.

This is growing on a tree where dad works.  He sampled it, and it has very little flavor.  It is smooth and about the size of a golf ball.  We originally thought black walnut, but now don't think so.

I hope it's not a buckeye nut.  I'd read that they are poisonous to humans and livestock.surprised
